THE JOURNEY SO FAR

1965: Born in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India.

1974 to 1982: Schooling: Sainik School, Kazhakootam, Thiruvanathapurm, Kerala.

1982-85: Graduation: BSc (Chemistry), St Xavier's College, Thiruvananthapuram.

1985-87: Post-Graduation: MCJ, Kerala University, Kariyavattom, Thiruvananthapuram.

1987-88: Passed Junior Research Fellowship Examination of UGC. Did programmes like talks, documentaries, discussions etc for Yuvavani (youth) programme of All India Radio, Thiruvananthapuram. Indecision as to whether to carry on with research or go for a job.

Oct 1988: An end to uncertainty. First job. Abandoned plans of research. Joined Madhya Pradesh Chronicle in Bhopal as sub-editor.

July 1989 to May 1990: Worked with Free Press in Indore as sub-editor. The high point was the 25th birthday spent in the company of Baba Amte at his cottage on the banks of Narmada in the Chhoti Kasaravat village in Khargone district of Madhya Pradesh.

June 1990: Dream of working in a national newspaper realised. Joined Indian Express in Ahmedabad. Also served in Vadodara when IE launched its edition there.

1990: Marriage to Sreerekha Kaimal (presently Deputy News Editor, Deccan Herald, Bangalore).

December 6, 1992: Experience of curfew for the first time in life as the peace of Ahmedabad is shattered with the demolition of Babri Masjid in Ayodhya by Hindu radicals. A wave of riots across the nation.

1993: Birth of son, Prarthik.

September 1995: Experience of flood for the first time in my life in Vadodara. For days main roads to the office are in knee-deep water. Mode of travel to reach office everyday: neighbour's cycle.

October 1995: Yet another unique experience; a scare in fact. Plague breaks out in Surat. Panic and exodus from the city. Main reason: doctors didn't have much idea of treating plague since the last time India had it was nearly 30 years ago.

February 1996: Joined Newstime in Hyderabad.

March 1999: Joined The Times of India in Bangalore.

2000: Began giving lectures on editorial production of newspaper to students of Christ College, Bangalore.

2001: Began giving talks on All India Radio, Bangalore, and on Gyan Vani, the FM channel of Indira Gandhi National Open University.

2004: Began active blogging.

2005: Started learning HTML.

2006: Guest lectures at more colleges.
